GIRLS IN THE HAY
Just after I arrived in Liverpool, Scotland,
the first of February 1944, we were stationed in a disbursement camp for
a while to be assigned to an Air Base. I don't remember the name of this
camp or just where it was in northern England. We weren't given passes
while we were there so to get out we had to slip out through a hole in
the back fence. I buddied up with a mess hall Sgt. and He took me to town
one night. We went out through a hole he knew about in the back fence
and went to town. Just being in from the States I am sure I bought the
drinks that evening as pay to learn the ropes. As we came back toward
our escape route we came to a hay shed by the road. I had a flashlight
in my G.I. coat pocket along with a quart of Stout, which is English beer.
When I shined the light into the hay, I saw what looked like a coat. At
this the Sgt. hollered loud and jumped into the hay. Out came two girls
who had been sleeping there. They were refugees from London and prostitutes.
We talked to them for a while and they wanted us to stay the night to
which we said we had to get back to camp. The Sgt. was shaking his head
No! to me all the time. He knew them and knew that they were not clean.
We gave them a bottle of Stout and some cigarettes and hiked on back to
our hole in the fence and to bed.
