Red Silk Shirt and Cowboy Boots
Several of us were sent to Lake Lure,
N. C. for R. & R.
for three or four weeks from Miami Beach, Fla. Most of the
time I was there, I wore a red silk shirt and cowboy boots.
As this was not uniform, the First Sgt. took exception to
that practice and put me on report. I was to report to the
Company Commander the next day. He was a Major. When I
reported to his office, I had on my red shirt and cowboy
boots. On knocking at the door I was told to come in. The
Commander said, "At ease." and proceeded to look me over. He
asked, "Where are you from, Sgt?" I answered, San Antone, to
which he said, "I'm from Cowtown, sit down let's talk." After
a long visit, I asked, "What about that Sgt. to which he
said, "Forget it, I'll take care of him, Us Texans gotta
stick together."
I continued to wear the shirt and boots while I was
there and didn't have any more word out of that Yankee Sgt.
